The Permit
"I JUST NEED A PERMIT SO I CAN BUILD MY HOUSE"... I hear this on a daily basis. Southern Water can help you achieve what you want. However, obtaining a septic permit can be difficult and confusing at times. Where is the best location of my drainfield or disposal field? What do I need to complete the permit? Is the septic tank installer given me the best system for the money I am spending? The Florida Administrative Code 64E-6 governs the design and installation of septic systems in the State of Florida. The Florida Department of Health enforces the code. However, the code is prescriptive and based on assumptions and does not necessarily provide you with the best design for your particular system. In general the guidelines are good. However, circumstances can dictate other needs for you that may not be addressed in the code. Generally, the upfront money you save by not having your system designed by a "QUALIFIED" system designer costs you in the construction costs at the time the system is installed. Life cycle cost analysis is not very common in this industry. The septic system is generally an after thought. It is something that just has to be done. You can get a system that meets code and can still be a puddle for you in a year or two. There are so many factors associated with a well designed septic system. It is better to allow a qualified individual help you in your system decisions. The health department is not allowed to recommend a septic system, individual, company, or equipment other than what is stipulated by the code.
The Florida Department of Health requires individuals that are trained in soils to perform soil evaluations (formerly the perc or perk test) for the disposal system. Qualified individuals that can do soils are Engineers, Certified Environmental Health Professionals, Master Septic Tank Contractors, and Registered Sanitarians. Southern Water and Soil, Inc., is a qualified engineering company and has staff trained and certified in soils performing soil evaluations. For a residential system a permit can be obtained in about 6 working days. For commerical or engineered septic systems a permit can be obtained in about 10-20 working days.

The Options
Choosing the right options for your septic system can be tricky at times. Picking the right location and equipment to go into a septic system can be down right challenging. The local health department can do the soil test for you; however, more than likely they will not tell you the best location on the lot to locate your disposal field (drain field) or the best filter to use, the best installers to use, or how to alleviate drainage problems that can be encountered on your site. There are options that can be installed on your septic system than can make the system last longer, SWS will try and help you understand and choose the best options for your project. Most installers will tell you very little about the system that you are having installed. There is very little education for the homeowner to choose the system that best suits their needs. Southern Water and Soil is here to help you pick the best location, design, components, and an installer to choose if you don't have one for your septic system. Our staff is eager to assist you. We will strive to give you a system that will suit your needs at the best available installed price that is available.
